“I have always been a fan of Carlo Scarpa’s work – his hand manages to balance cement, metal, marble, water and nature with ease. Brion-Vega Cemetery, located in San Vito d’Altivole Italy, is a great example of his work. Completed in 1972, Scarpa described the memorial as, "A garden for the dead; a sacred temple that gains a sense of poetry over time. It's a place where beauty has the power to redeem man from his limitations". The Italian Sculpture Garden for the Venice Biennale is another favourite – combining ivy-covered curves with water features. These are places that I enjoy visiting at least once a year. Whilst their character changes across the seasons, I prefer seeing them in summer - the grass is luxuriant, ponds are bursting with water lilies and cement is covered with green climbing plants.”
