Matthias Kaiser is an Austrian potter who uses unrefined materials for his ceramics and often exposes the process of making to give pieces a raw quality. Kaiser studied at Parsons School of Design and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and has completed apprenticeships with master potters in Japan.
This vase is made from two wheel-thrown cylinders joined together. The piece has been fired three times and glazed with a mixture of reed ash, wood ash, feldspar and iron ore. It is coated on the outside with a runny madara glaze and over-painted with platinum.
