Matthias Kaiser is an Austrian potter who uses unrefined materials for his ceramics and often exposes the process of making to give pieces a raw quality. Kaiser studied at Parsons School of Design and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and has completed apprenticeships with master potters in Japan.
This wheel thrown vase has been made from quartz and limonite-rich stoneware clay. The vase has been fired several times and glazed with an apple wood ash, then over-glazed with platinum to create a unique finish. The firing process has occurred in coarse sand - creating a contrasting raw base.
